SpeedGrid vs Infinity New Tab

Two visual launchpads. One important choice about depth.

I’m Joey, the designer and photographer who makes SpeedGrid. Infinity New Tab is not affiliated with SpeedGrid. Infinity is an established all-in-one dashboard; SpeedGrid is the newer, more focused system I built after years of wanting a cleaner way to organize a large online life.

What feels different

The overlap is real. The organizing model is not.

Dashboard versus map

Infinity combines shortcuts with weather, notes, tasks, browser bookmarks, history, top sites, and Gmail status. SpeedGrid deliberately keeps the page centered on navigating. It is a better fit when the destination map itself needs to be exceptionally clear.

Icon folders versus workspace hierarchy

Infinity can group icons in folders and open multiple common sites together. SpeedGrid’s hierarchy goes further in a different direction: every grid is a focused workspace, related grids can live inside folders, and one card can hold a primary and secondary target.

Appearance settings versus reusable profiles

Both products offer wallpapers, icon styling, colors, sizing, and layout controls. SpeedGrid turns its visual decisions into reusable profiles, so Work, Home, Travel, or a client workspace can change character without rebuilding the design each time.

Three questions

What do you want waiting in every new tab?

The right answer depends less on a feature count and more on whether your tab should surface utilities or quietly route you somewhere else.

  1. 1

Would you use the built-in utilities?

Choose Infinity when weather, notes, tasks, Chrome bookmarks, history, top sites, or Gmail status would replace other tools you already open. SpeedGrid does not claim those all-in-one dashboard strengths.

  2. 2

    Is one folder layer enough?

Infinity is a strong classic speed-dial choice for icons and folders. Choose SpeedGrid when projects and parts of your life need an extra layer: several grids, folders of grids, dual-destination cards, and search across the structure.

  3. 3

    Which permissions match your habits?

Infinity’s current store listing says bookmarks, history, and Gmail access are optional and used only when their matching features are enabled. SpeedGrid does not request browsing-history or Gmail access; it uses an account for cross-device web access, backup, and restore features.

Stay with Infinity if...

Its broader dashboard already works for you.

Infinity New Tab is established, highly rated, multilingual, and unusually feature-rich. Keep it when its widgets, browser-data integrations, wallpaper library, icon folders, and optional partner shortcuts fit the way you browse. Try SpeedGrid when you want less dashboard and more intentional visual structure.

A transparent detail

Infinity may include removable affiliate shortcuts.

Its current Chrome Web Store listing says optional partner shortcuts such as eBay may appear by default and can be removed or replaced at any time. SpeedGrid does not preload affiliate destination cards. That difference may matter if you want the first grid to contain only choices you made.

Test the organizing model

Build one grid before you move everything.

SpeedGrid is free to start. Recreate the destinations you use most, put one related pair on the same card, and see whether the extra structure makes your browser feel more like your own desk.
